“In an age when AI can itself function as a medium for artistic production, and when anyone can generate paintings or illustrations simply by prompting an AI, I believe that artists who continue to choose painting, the slowest and most traditional of visual media, must critically examine why
they still choose to paint today. My practice addresses this question by minimizing personal arbitrariness and repeatedly drawing lines day after day, seeking to produce paintings that critically reflect upon the very act of painting in the contemporary era.
The works were created by alternating between two acrylic paint colors each day. The two colors were selected using a custom AI roulette that I developed in order to eliminate personal preference. The width of each colored band is determined solely by the amount of time I spend working in front of the canvas on that particular day, rather than by any predetermined image or composition. Through this process, I relinquish compositional decision-making while placing artistic production and everyday life on the same continuum. By abandoning highly subjective forms of painting, I seek to raise a fundamental question: what does it mean to paint in the contemporary age?”
